  • Degree: Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) and approved by the Air Force Surgeon General in the year of the applicant’ s graduation.

  • License: Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPA) license to practice optometry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Applicants must have 2 years of general TPA practice of optometry or one year of ACOE accredited post-graduate residency training in an appropriate specialty area.

  • May require travel to attend and complete the USAF Refractive Surgery Co-Manager Workshop offered by the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. The Government will direct travel to, and attendance in, the course.

  • The optometrist shall have sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform optometric tasks, to include, but not limited to the following:

    • Participate in the installation’ s occupational vision program involving functions performed by the optometry clinic

    • Perform a primary role in the visual readiness and optimization of active duty personnel for both war and peace mission accomplishment.

    • Participate in squadron process improvement activities, evaluation of squadron performance, and optometric-related research and provide training to ophthalmic technicians, other optometrists, and other wing staff as appropriate. Process improvement activities will include, but not limited to peer reviews.

  • Credentialing: Meet peer review documentation requirements for credentialing standards and AFMS coding audits.
